What Self-Care Can Look Like

What Self-Care Can Look Like

title

Bubble baths with twenty candles and foamy suds or doing your favorite face mask while painting your toes with that color that perks you up.

These are the touted forms of self-care plastered around the internet that are ‘hot’ right now. I think this takes on a bit of a limiting POV on self-care, however. It doesn’t have to look like sunshine and rainbows; it doesn’t have to be grand. Really, how often do you have the time to find and light 20 candles, make the bath the right temperature, and then avoid getting your book wet from bath water? I digress, but my point with this is that there are so many easy and small acts you can take to take care of yourself - some of which may not even read as “self-care”. Below is a list I’ve started compiling, detailing forms of self-care that might not appear to be such at a first glance:

  • going to the movies alone
  • listening to sad music (and on the opposite: songs that bring you euphoria and make you dance alone in your house)
  • keeping your headphones in while in public so you can jam to music, listen to a podcast and intentionally disconnect from the world
  • deep cleaning
  • looking through old photos on facebook and reflecting how you’ve changed
  • calling family members
  • calling an old friend
  • letting go of the guilt associated with buying a $15 salad and enjoying every bite of over-priced kale
  • doing things you loved as a child (for me, this is scootering and rollerblading as of lately)
  • cooking alone
  • turning off your phone
  • going to bed at 8 pm and embracing it
  • social media purge (thanks, archive feature of instagram!)
  • donating and simplifying your items
  • writing a to-do list
  • reading and editing your linkedin
  • talking to people younger than you and remembering how far you’ve come
  • color-coding your google calendar

What else should be on this list, that isn’t? Let me know!
